A COLCHESTER United footballer has been banned from the roads for drink driving.

Striker Jamie Guy downed four bottles of beer at a neighbours' barbeque before getting behind the wheel in what he has said was an “act of stupidity”.

Colchester Magistrates' Court heard today that Guy got into his car about an hour after drinking the beers.

The 20-year-old was stopped by police as he drove along St John's Road in the town on May 3.

Marie Partner, U's chief executive, said: “As a football club, we are very disappointed to hear of this news.

“We in no way condone Jamie's actions, particularly as we have actively worked with the local authorities and anti-drink drive campaigns to show our support in their activities.

“We are sure that Jamie is very regretful for what he has done, and the matter will be dealt with internally.”

The striker pleaded guilty was given an interim ban and will be sentenced at Colchester Magistrate's Court next month.

Guy came through the Colchester Utd youth system and got his big break into the first team under former boss Phil Parkinson.

He was put out on loan to other clubs including Cambridge and Gravesend, before cementing his place in the first team where he has earned a reputation as a “super sub”.
