Under-fire Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair has just announced his resignation, saying he was resigning in the best interests of the people of London and the Met Police and will leave his post on December 1.

He added that he could not continue without the support of London mayor Boris Johnson, who he said had told him that he wanted a change in leadership at the Met.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith pad to tribute to Sir Ian, saying she had accepted his resignation “with regret”.

Deputy commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson will take over as acting commissioner when Sir Ian steps down.
