A UNIVERSITY has asked graduating students not to celebrate in the traditional way by throwing their mortar boards in the air - in case somebody gets hurt.

Anglia Ruskin University, which has campuses in Chelmsford and Cambridge, said the corner of the mortar board may hit someone as it falls.

University bosses have made the request in a statement on the university's website in a statement which asks "graduands" not to throw their hats into the air.

The statement adds: “This not only causes damage to the hats but it can also cause injury if the corner of the hat hits the graduand or others who may be nearby.'
