Queuing traffic for five miles had formed on the A12 after a camper van fire.
The fire was reported at about 6.20pm on the road London-bound near Witham on Sunday.
Motorists had experienced long delays while the emergency services worked at the scene.
A force spokeswoman said the road was now clear with traffic beginning to flow as usual.
At this time it is not clear whether anyone was injured in the fire.
