Update: A14 re-opens following early morning collision - man in Addenbrookes Hospital with life threatening injuries

Police were called shortly after 1am this morning to reports of a collision between a lorry and a car.

The man driving the car suffered life threatening injuries, and has been taken to Addenbrookes Hospital.

Kevin Smith, a driver travelling on the eastbound carriageway who was first at the scene said: “I held the car driver’s hand to reassure him there was someone there while calling the emergency services on my phone. He was conscious but mumbling and confused, not screaming in pain despite being severely trapped in his car.

“The police arrived first and while they attended to the man I helped to shut off the lorry engine by kinking the fuel line from the tank until the engine stopped, because the key could not be turned to kill the engine.”

“There was debris all over the eastbound carriageway, but the lorry driver was ok, even though the driver’s side of the cab had ripped off in the impact.”

“It feels strange because at the time you get on with what you have to do, but afterwards you think that could have been me.”

The westbound carriageway was closed between the Trimley interchange and Trimley onslip, while one lane heading eastbound was also closed between junction 58 for Seven Hills and junction 59 for Trimley St Martin.

All lanes have now been re-opened.

A diversion is in place through High Road in Trimley and Felixstowe Road, and the A1156 back to junction 58, while emergency services carry out investigation work at the scene.

Motorists are advised that congestion and severe delays are likely.
