A DEPARTMENT store in Ipswich town centre has been cordoned off this afternoon after a fire broke out in a lift shaft.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to reports of the incident at Debenhams in Westgate Street at about 2.30pm.
Two crews were sent to the scene but the fire had been extinguished before they arrived. The blaze had been started in the motor room.
A Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Although the fire was believed extinguished on arrival crews used a thermal image camera to make sure their were no hot spots. Once crews were happy that no fire had spread to any other part of the building, they returned to base.”
