THE scale of devastation caused by a major blaze at a Suffolk farm has been revealed.

iwitness Tim Stygall has sent in new images showing the aftermath of the fire, which broke out early this morning.

More than 25 fire fighters were scrambled after flames ripped through a barn in Pages Green, Wetheringsett, near Stowmarket, around 3am.

The fire - which was being fuelled by 500-tonnes of straw bales in the barn - engulfed a beet harvester and another farm vehicle.

Mr Stygall, who lives nearby at White Horse Corner, said: “In the cold light of day, the aftermath of last night’s fire can be seen. The 350,000 beet harvester is a total write off as well as the barn and contents of straw.”

He also took photos at the height of the blaze, after being woken at 2.15am.

“I looked out the front curtains and low and behold there was a glow through the trees.

“I went outside and walked to the corner so I could get a better view.

“By this time the flames were 60 or 70 feet high. Then there was an explosion, a deep reverberating explosion.

“Fortunately the barn was semi-derelict concrete and asbestos farm building.

“But parked outside was a new six-wheel beet harvester and a front-end loader.

“It was a case of it being just a barn fire and no-one involved.”

Mr Stygall shared his images of the fire via our user-led iwitness site.

The fire was under control by around 5am and the straw allowed to burn under controlled conditions.

Fire fighters remain on site carrying out a full assessment of the area around the blaze.

Police are also on scene to investigate if there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire.
