A lorry driver has been suspected of careless driving after a seven vehicle collision on the A12 in Essex this morning.

The London-bound A12 was congested with slow moving traffic from Junction 20 at Hatfield Peverel to Junction 29, Colchester Community Stadium, after a collision near Witham.

Officers were called to the scene shortly after 7am.

The lorry driver was questioned by police on suspicion of careless driving following a multi-vehicle crash.

The vehicles involved were a white DAF HGV, two white Ford Transit vans, a grey BMW Z4, a grey Vauxhall Zafira, a blue Toyota Avensis and a red Ford Fiesta.

Two people were taken to hospital with slight injuries.

One lane was kept open past the scene of the crash and the road was fully reopened at about 10 30am.

The lorry driver was interviewed by police and has been reported for careless driving. Enquiries are continuing.

Adam Pipe, casualty reduction manager for Essex Police said: “We have been dealing with a number of collisions on the A12.

“Slow down, remember tailgating causes collisions.

“Don’t be distracted by things in you car, be aware and please respect all road users.

“A number of incidents we’re dealing with this morning are as a result of drivers driving too closely.”

Any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police should contact Pc Matt Turner at Chelmsford Road Policing Office on 101.
