A MAN has been airlifted to hospital after a coach carrying nearly 50 children was involved in a crash with a skip lorry.

The accident happened around 9.20am this morning on the B1083 Woodbridge Road at Alderton.

The road has been closed while emergency services deal with the accident.

There were understood to be 48 children on the coach. The youngsters and the driver are all believed to be uninjured and have been taken to a safe area.

However a spokeswoman for Suffolk police said the male driver of the skip lorry was trapped within the vehicle and was airlifted to Ipswich Hospital by the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

The children are understood to be from the Alexanders International School at Bawdsey Manor and were on their way to Cambridge.

Fire crews from Orford and Ipswich attended along with the ambulance service and police.

Diversions have been put in place.
