An underground explosion has caused the High Street in Clacton to shut this morning.
Engineers from UK Power Networks are working to restore power to 36 properties that have lost electricity following a fault on an underground electricity cable.
Twelve properties initially lost power at 6am this morning.
Engineers that arrived to investigate were alerted to the fact that there was a smell of burning in the air and the pavement felt hot. A paving slab above the cable had also shifted slightly.
To enable engineers to excavate the area and fix the fault, a further 24 properties had their power cut off at about 8.25am.
