A search was underway on Saturday after members of the public thought they heard the sound of barking from sewers under Newton Road in the town.
Firefighters and engineers from Anglian Water were investigating the reports on Saturday lunchtime, but had not yet found any sign of a dog.
The first reports were heard on Friday night, but there were more on Saturday morning before the rescue bid was launched.
A spokesman for Suffolk police said later in the afternoon that was nothing was found, and that the noise was caused by cars driving over the drain cover sounded vaguely like the noise of a barking dog.
