Two women have been taken to hospital after three cars collided on the A12 at Stanway in Colchester.
Firefighters released the two women from their vehicles after the collision.
Crews from Colchester and Manningtree were called to the northbound carriageway between Eight Ash Green at junction 26 and Colchester at junction 27 at 8.52am.
They used cutting equipment to release the two trapped casualties by 9.34am and left them in the care of the ambulance service.
The ambulance service was called at 8.46am and dispatched two ambulances and a paramedic officer to the scene.
Both women, thought to be in their 40s were conveyed to Colchester General Hospital for further treatment.
