A man arrested after driving a car into a security barrier at Stansted Airport has been released on bail.

The 21-year-old man from Enfield was detained after the green Ford Fiesta struck the barrier outside Enterprise House in Thremhall Avenue, shortly after 4.30pm.

The building is the main office hub at the Essex airport.

Officers arrested the man on suspicion of public order offences, and he was initially taken into custody at the airport’s police station before being taken to a local hospital for treatment, where he remains.

He has been bailed until May 7.

The area was evacuated as a precuation while the vehicle was searched, and trains prevented from stopping at the airport until the situation was resolved.

However a search by Army bomb disposal teams confirmed the area was safe.

Flights were not affected and the airport continued to operate as normal.

Essex Police said enquiries are continuing and thanked the public for their patience.
