A man who had an unknown liquid thrown into his face in Bury St Edmunds last night has been discharged from hospital, police have said.

Officers were called shortly after 6.40pm on Tuesday to reports that a man, aged in his 20s, had a liquid thrown into his face in the car park of the St Olaves Precinct.

Emergency services were called to the scene in St Olaves Road and the man was taken to hopsital for treatment, after sustaining minor injuries.

He has since been discharged from hospital but police said they are yet to confirm what the liquid actually was.

David Nettleton, county and district councillor for Bury St Edmunds, described the incident as “very dangerous”.

He said: “It is a very sad incident. The Howard estate is a nice place, and the people are very relaxed.

“Unfortunately, there seem to be one or two who let themselves down with their behaviour.

“It is a very dangerous incident but I’m sure the law will take its course.

“I was a bit shocked when I heard about it and I hope the young man who was hit by the liquid is okay.”

Mr Nettleton added that these types of incidents are very rare in Bury St Edmunds.

“It’s not great but it is an isolated incident,” he said.

“Bury is a very nice town with mainly law-abiding people but unfortunately these things sometimes happen.”

Robert Everitt, Bury’s other county councillor, echoed Mr Nettleton’s comments.

He said: “The Howard estate, in the main, is a great place to live and 99% of the people who live there are honest and hardworking.

“Unfortunately, there are a few individuals who spoil it.

“It is very sad and I hope the victim makes a full recovery.”A cordon was set-up at the parade of shops last night while investigations were carried out.

Police believe those involved were known to each other and that there is no wider threat to the community.
