CROWDS of all ages braved torrential rain to enjoy impressive firework displays across the region.

The hugely popular annual display at Christchurch Park in Ipswich on Saturday night did not fail to excite as rockets, sparklers and fountains of colour lit up the night sky.

Despite the rain not letting up until late into the night, youngsters, families and couples made their way to the park for the 37th annual display.

Adventure into Space was the theme of the event, organised by the 11th Ipswich Scout Group, and features included a dramatic NASA Apollo 13 countdown, the musical adventure of Star Wars and Star Trek and the mystery of War of the Worlds' gripping intergalactic battle scenes.

After the 20-minute show, there was plenty of other attractions taking place, including a funfair and live music.

The musical fireworks, which cost £32,000, were designed and fired by the Shell Shock firework Company from Bramfield, near Halesworth.

A firework display at Foxhall Stadium also went down well with onlookers who enjoyed some banger racing before.

Jim Gregory, stadium commentator, said: “It was wet and there were a few less people than last year but the stadium was still pretty full.

“We cannot thank people enough for turning up. We must have the best supporters in the world because people came and got soaked but it was still a good night.”

Last night people trekked to The Firework Spectacular at the Felixstowe and Walton United Football Club ground in Dellwood Avenue for a massive display.

The event was held in aid of the football club and Cancer Research UK.
