Elizabeth Lambert was suspended from the University of New Mexico team after being seen hitting, kicking and viciously pulling an opponent down by her ponytail during a game against Brigham Young University.
Millions of people have since watched online clips from the game, which happened last Thursday.
The college player has apologised for her actions but she could still face further disciplinary action.
She said: “I am deeply and wholeheartedly regretful for my actions.
“My actions were uncalled for. I let my emotions get the best of me in a heated situation. I take full responsibility for my actions.”
