Five fire crews were needed to put out a fire in Wattisfield last night.

When the fire service was first called just before 11pm it was thought the incident at the two-storey house in Honeypot Lane was a chimney fire.

One crew from Ixworth was sent to the scene but then more information was received saying the fire had spread to a bedroom.

A fire engine from Elmswell was dispatched and on arrival requested a third crew, with firefighters from Diss being sent to the incident.

Two more crews were then sent from Bury St Edmunds as the fire had spread to the roof and several other rooms.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and equipped with thermal imaging cameras used a short extension ladder, two hose reels and one jet to fight the blaze.

They had the fire surrounded and contained to the first floor and roof just before midnight. It was extinguished half an hour later with a relief crew sent from Eye to maintain a “watching brief” of the house.
