Weather: Big freeze shows no sign of ending

FREEZING conditions are set to continue across the region, with roads proving hazardous and public transport suffering delays.

Police said there had been no reports of any major accidents on the roads of Suffolk and north Essex.

However, drivers are being urged to take extra care as temperatures are likely to plummet to -4C through the night - making roads and pavements incredibly icy.

The freezing conditions are likely to continue into the weekend, although the mercury could rise to 2C.

Phil Garner, of Norwich based forecasters Weatherquest, said: “It will not be nice overnight. It will be very frosty. There will be a few clear intervals and the frost will harden, making driving conditions very difficult.”

Mr Garner said the temperatures were likely to rise slightly over the weekend - although this morning would still be very cold.

“There is a front coming in from the west which will cause some sleet or snow to fall on top of the already frozen surface,” he said. “There might be a couple of centimetres of snow.

“It will still be cold but there is likely to be a little bit of brightness during the day so temperatures could be as high as 2C.

“However, then I’m afraid there will be another band of rain or sleet tonight, which could cause some frost and icy roads for Sunday.”
