A NEW Year's freeze is set to continue, bringing at least two weeks of widespread frosts as bitterly cold conditions sweep across Europe, forecasters predicted last night.

It will arrive courtesy of a cold front moving in from Siberia, which could see temperatures drop as low as minus 4C.

Met Office forecasters are confident conditions will stay below average for the next fortnight with maximum daytime temperatures between 2C (36F) and 4C (39F).

East Anglia will experience snow and bitter winds from the east, completing the coldest start to a winter in more than 30 years, and bringing with it a risk of hazardous road conditions and disruption to public transport.

The wet weather is expected to hold off until the New Year but revellers are still advised to wrap up warm tomorrow night.

Ipswich weatherman Ken Blowers, said: “It's going to stay cold for the foreseeable future because of a high pressure system centred over Scandinavia.

“Though cold, it has still been dry and bright which is fairly rare for this time of year. We haven't seen any rain here for 16 days, and a total of one inch of rain for December is well below average.

“At the end of this week the high pressure system will change position to over Greenland and Iceland. This usually brings a northerly air stream and could mean snow showers.”
