Hundreds of airmen at a west Suffolk US Air Force base came together this week to mark Memorial Day.

Staff from RAF Mildenhall gathered at the Madingley American Cemetery in Cambridge for their country’s annual ceremony of remembrance on Monday.

More than 1,000 people attended the event, with about 160 airmen participating in the ceremony along with veterans of the US military.

The 14th US Air Force Chief of Staff, retired general Merrill McPeak, told the gathered crowds: “We gather to think about the American men and women who fell in service to their country.

“Throughout the US and in cemeteries like this around the world, we put flowers and flags on grave sites and take a moment out of busy lives to pause to remember.”

Memorial Day is an annual public holiday in America, and is held on the final Monday of May each year. It dates back to the American Civil War.
