A man escaped a house fire in Witham, which ripped through 60% of the ground floor, by climbing through a downstairs window.
Firefighters attended the terraced property in Bronte Road at about 12.20am this morning and put the fire out within half an hour. No one else was inside.
A joint police and fire service investigation will be carried out into the cause of the blaze.
