A 30-year-old man was left with broken ribs and needing several stitches to his face after being savagely punched and kicked in a vicious and unprovoked attack.

Detectives are now hunting the man who carried out the apparently motiveless attack as the victim made his way home alone after enjoying a night out.

The attack happened outside the EMG Ford showroom in Fornham Road, Bury St Edmunds, at around 2.15am on Saturday.

A man approached the victim and launched a vicious attack on him, knocking him the ground by punching him in the face several times and then kicking him repeatedly whilst he lay defenceless on the floor. The assailant then ran off.

The shaken victim made his way home, bleeding and bruised, before calling the police.

When officers arrived at the victim's home in Bury St Edmunds they were so concerned by his injuries they advised him to go to the West Suffolk Hospital.

He needed several stitches to cuts in his face and was diagnosed with several fractured ribs.

A Suffolk police spokesman said: "As far as we are aware this was a totally motiveless attack. The victim has said he didn't know his attacker and that there was no reason for the attack.

"The man approached him and punched him in the face several times and then kicked him about the body as he lay on the floor.

"Obviously the victim is very shaken and has received some nasty injuries. We are now appealing to the public for any assistance then can give us regarding this incident."

The man who was attacked had been out for the evening in Bury St Edmunds. He had been to Brazilia's Nightclub and then to a food outlet before making his way home along Fornham Road.

Officers investigating the case are keen to speak to a female who saw the victim in Tollgate Lane, Bury St Edmunds, shortly after the attack took place.

The assailant is described as white, around 5ft 10in tall and aged in his 30s. He was well-built and had short dark hair.
