FIRE-fighters from three counties were called to a road crash which left two women severely trapped - one with life threatening injuries.

The crews, from Brandon and Mildenhall in Suffolk, Littleport in Cambridgeshire and Thetford in Norfolk, used heavy duty cutting gear to free the two victims from the wreckage of the three cars involved in the accident at Wangford near RAF Lakenheath.

The severely injured woman was airlifted to West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmunds, by the East Anglian Air Ambulance, and was said to be fighting for her life in the unit's intensive care department.

A police spokesman said the accident, which involved a silver Suzuki, a Blue Ford Escort and a red Ford Mondeo, happened at just before 12.30pm today on the main Brandon Road at Wangford.

She said: “Two people were trapped and one, a female, had serious head injuries. Road closures are being put in place around the A1065.”

A fire service spokesman said both the female casualties were freed from their cars and taken to hospital.
