Police are investigating an alleged rape in Colchester.

A woman in her 20s had walked from the town centre, accompanied by a man, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

She entered an address near Hawthorn Avenue and, shortly afterwards, at about 4.30am, a man gained entry to the house.

Numerous lines of enquiry are being followed after the woman reported that she was then raped.

Police said the victim has been safeguarded and is currently being supported by specialist officers, while the investigation continues.
