A MAJOR investigation was launched last night after the body of a woman was discovered by a river just outside a Suffolk town.

The gruesome find was made by a member of the public alongside the River Lark near Fornham Park, just outside Bury St Edmunds, shortly after 5pm yesterday.

Police were immediately called and the area sealed off. Scenes of crime officers were called in, although it is thought they will have to return this morning to continue investigations.

Officers, who were last night treating the death as "unexplained", were unable to give any more information about the approximate age of the dead woman.

Last night, Suffolk police spokesman Mike Nunn said: "The discovery was made by a member of the public who called police at approximately 5.10pm this evening. Police are currently at the scene which has been cordoned off while investigations continue.

"As is standard procedure, police are treating the death as unexplained at this stage."
