A woman suffered serious injuries after she was involved in a collision with a cyclist on a busy Ipswich street on Saturday.
Emergency services were called to the scene, in Northgate Street at around 4pm on Saturday, September 1.
The woman is believed to have been struck as she crossed the cycle lane, which directs cyclists against the flow of traffic along the bustling one-way street.
According to witnesses, the collision happened close to Cash Converters near the junction with Great Colman Street.
The road was closed by police, as was the junction to Buttermarket, as emergency staff treated the injured woman.
She was taken to Ipswich Hospital by the East of England Ambulance Service.
A police spokesman said she had suffered a serious head injury.
Witnesses reported seeing shoppers drop their bags and rush over to help the woman in the moments after the collision.
One witness, who works close to the scene, said: “I came out just after it had happened.
“I was told the cyclist was trying to dodge her but couldn’t get out of the way. She fell on the floor and knocked her head.
“It’s such a shame.
“It’s scary something like that happening so close.
“Everyone had rushed over to help her when it happened.
“The whole road was blocked off by police.”
She said she saw a second person treated by paramedics after fainting close to the scene.
“She was shaking and drinking some water before she fell to the ground. There was a second ambulance that took her away.”
Another witness, who wished not to be named, said: “It happened right outside Cash Converters, I came out ten minutes after it had happened.
“There were lots of police and paramedics about.
“They blocked the whole road.”
He questioned why the road had a cycle lane running the opposite way to traffic, saying he has had a close call with a cyclist himself.
“To me it makes no sense the road waving a one way system, for cars one way and a cycle lane the other,” he said.
“The road is too narrow for it to be one way and to have cycle lane.
“I have almost been hut by a cyclist down here.”
If you witnessed the collision call police on 101 quoting CAD 277 of September 1.
