A Suffolk town will once again honour its age-old affinity with the river on which it has grown and thrived since the Middle Ages.

Woodbridge Regatta and Riverside Fair returns tomorrow to uphold a historic kinship with the Deben.

Organisers are promising a fun-filled celebration of maritime life, stretching from the Tide Mill to the model yacht pond.

The event starts at noon with opening races and demonstrations, finishing around 5pm with the famous Woodbridge and District Lions Club Duck Dive in the model yacht pond, where there will also be a Model Yacht Regatta during the afternoon.

On the river there will be yacht, dingy, rowing and tender racing, raft building and racing, and river boat trips, while on land there will be stalls, children’s activities including crafts and face-painting, and musical entertainment. A crabbing competition will also take place later in the afternoon.

Woodbridge’s historic Tide Mill Living Museum will be open and free to enter - and the team will be selling the mill’s award-winning stoneground flour.

Suffolk Coastal MP Therese Coffey officially opens proceedings outside Woodbridge Boatyard Shed at 1pm.

The highest ever number of rafts will enter the Scouts Raft Race from Woodbridge Boatyard Ramp to Tide Mill, where heats begin at 2pm and the final sets off at 2.45pm.

The hotly contested single oar sculling race, in memory of Frank and Christine Knights, launches from Woodbridge Cruising Club Pontoon at 4.30pm.

Boat trips are being organised by Woodbridge Boatyard and, although free, a donation in aid of the RNLI will be welcomed.

The Regatta is organised and run entirely by volunteers, but each year there is a bucket collection, this time to support 1st Woodbridge Scout Group and the Explorer Unit.
