A touch-rugby tournament is to be held to help encourage new players to take up the sport.
Woodbridge Rugby Club is to host this year’s Seckford Shield Community Touch Rugby Tournament from noon on Saturday, August 18.
The competition will be played between teams of seven players from the surrounding area, plus subs.
It will last all day at the club’s grounds of Hatchley Barn, Orford Road, Bromeswell, with the 20min matches, which have to include at least one female player on the pitch at all times, kicking off from noon and last until the tournament winner is announced at approximately 5.30pm.
Previous winners include The Mariner’s Arms and Woodbridge Rugby Club itself.
There will be refreshments available and visitors, along with rugby-themed games and other entertainment for younger children.
Organisers say the relaxed atmosphere makes it an ideal way to introduce child spectators to the sport.
The event is supported by the O2 Touch programme and Suffolk Coastal District Council.
Andrew Wilesmith, coaching coordinator at Woodbridge Rugby Club, said: “It’s a fantastic event that brings the local community together at one of the premier clubs in the area.
“Woodbridge is a truly inclusive club with a thriving boys and girls programme and a men’s and women’s team that welcomes everyone. The touch element is a great way to give back to such a supportive community.”
To welcome beginners to the sport a short, informal and light training session will be held from 11.00am.
