A wheelchair rugby squad’s journey towards becoming major contenders in the sport has reached a significant landmark.

Woodbridge Rugby Club’s wheelchair team, the Wheeled Warriors, have taken delivery of 10 brand new, tailor-made chairs - each worth £3,000 - plus a brand new box trailer for storage and transportation.

The money was raised through an anonymous donation, funding from EDF Energy, and a sponsored cycle ride from Land’s End to John o’ Groats by the father of one of the squad.

The Wheeled Warriors are growing in number and train every Sunday morning, between 10.30am and 12.30pm, at Rock Barracks. They hope to join a league at the end of the summer, and recently went along to watch a national tournament in Leicester. Team member Joy Elias said: “As with so many disabled sports, the cost of equipment can be a major barrier, and we are so grateful to our sponsor and donors for their support. With these fabulous new chairs we can bring sport to the physically challenged in East Anglia and compete in this exciting sport where a lot of disability can be accommodated and a true team community built.”
