A young offenders institution in Suffolk is to be turned into a prison for adult males, and another Suffolk prison is set to close altogether, as part of a Government modernisation programme.
The plan to replace young offenders at HMYOI Warren Hill, in Hollesley, near Woodbridge, with adult male prisoners form part of overall plans to reduce the cost of prison to taxpayers by more than £500m within the current spending review period.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) is to close four older prisons nationwide, including Lowestoft’s HMP Blundeston, which it says would be too expensive to upgrade.
A new 2,000-place “super prison” will be built in Wrexham, and feasibility work will begin on a second large jail to in the South East of England. The MoJ has also confirmed opening dates for the new house blocks – mini-prisons – being built to create 1,200 new places at four sites across England.
