A MAN has died after being crushed when a crane on a barge collapsed at Harwich International Port.

Emergency services were called at just before 8am this morning to the scene of the accident in which a second man was seriously injured.

The pair were believed to be doing work on the Greater Gabbard wind farm which is under construction 18 miles off Harwich.

The massive turbines for the project, which is due to finish by 2012, have been transported out of Harwich International Port for construction this week.

Essex Police and the Health and Safety Executive have launched an investigation into the cause of the tragedy.

If connected with the Greater Gabbard wind farm, it will be the second fatality of a worker on the project.

In November last year a man was killed in an accident on a Dutch-registered tug boat which was working on the wind farm out in the North Sea.
