Month to go until the end of the World War 1 trail in Bury St Edmunds

With a month to go until Armistice Day and the end of the World War 1 Trail, in Bury St Edmunds, organisers are urging people to visit the town and at the same time complete the route.

A total of 18 pieces of iconic artwork have been created for the project which is being jointly organised by Our Bury St Edmunds, the town centre business improvement group, and the MyWiSH Charity, which supports the West Suffolk Hospital, and sponsored by Treatt, the fragrance company in the town.

This year is the centenary of the ending of the 1914 to 1918 conflict and the trail has been created to commemorate this signficant landmark.

All money raised from the trail will be contributing towards the Every Heart Matters campaign, which is aimed at raising £500,000 to create a new cardiac diagnostic unit at the hospital.

A total of just over 270 entries have been completed for the trail with 10,000 brochures printed to help guide visitors round the pieces.

An addition to the trail has been a Tommy Silhouette which has been made and donated by Mike Wells from A J Joinery, in Cockfield, and which is situated next to the Victoria Cross just outside the Abbey Gardens, in Angel Hill.

Mark Cordell, the chief executive of Our Bury St Edmunds, said: “The trail has proved to be a popular attraction in the town.

“It’s been really well supported and we have been getting people into the town centre.

“It’s helped to raise the profile of the town and funds of My WiSH but also it’s been the town’s recognition of what local people did 100 years ago and we’re all still reaping the benefits of.

“I go round the town regularly checking the pieces, particularly outside ones to make sure they are okay, and I have always seen people doing the trail.”

People have to find all the 18 pieces and against each piece is a letter. They then have to be rearraged to spell a well known phrase and everyone which is correct will be put into a draw.

There will be 10 winners with a top prizes of £100 and other prizes which will all be town centre vouchers.

The brochures can be picked up at the town’s Tourist Information Centre, at The Apex.

At the end of the trail all the pieces of art will be auctioned for the campaign and along with sponsorship for them, which has come from a host of businesses in and around the town, it has already created funds for the Every Heart Matters campaign.
