STAFF and visitors have been treated to a glimpse of the newest arrival at Colchester Zoo - a baby anteater.

The baby giant anteater was born several weeks ago but has barely been seen by keepers as it has been spending most of its time hidden by its mother, Furai, in the nest.

The new addition joins three other giant anteaters at the zoo - mum and dad Furai and Gilberto, and their previous offspring, Silva, who was born in 2008.

The new baby, which is strong and healthy, can now often be seen riding around on the base of Furai's tail.

Giant anteaters are classed as 'near threatened' in the wild. They can be found in several parts of South America, but are at risk from agricultural encroachment into their habitat and from forest fires.
