Former Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy is set to be appointed manager of Blackpool, according to reports.

McCarthy, now 63, has been out of work since being sacked by Cardiff in 2021 but is now said to be closing in on a return to the game with the Tangerines.

Blackpool sacked Michael Appleton on Wednesday after a run of 10 games without a win, leaving them 23rd in the Championship table.

And the club are now set to turn to McCarthy, who will be charged with keeping the club in the second tier.

He is likely to agree a deal until the end of the season.

Since leaving Ipswich in 2018, after nearly six years with the club, McCarthy has spent a second stint in charge of the Republic of Ireland and briefly led Cypriot side APOEL, prior to a return to club football with Cardiff.

After an impressive start with the Bluebirds, McCarthy was fired after only 10 months in charge following a poor run of results.

The Blackpool job will be McCarthy’s ninth in management, after stints with Millwall, Ireland, Sunderland and Wolves, prior to his arrival at Town in 2012.
