AFC Sudbury 3 Cheshunt 0

AFC got themselves back on the winning track as they took on Hertfordshire side Cheshunt and sent them back home on the end of a 3-0 scoreline, writes Tony Simpson.

Sudbury boss Mark Morsley recalled midfielders Joe Wright and Ollie Peters both USA bound at the end of the season and they gave the side some real energy.

The back four, all AFC Academy boys were probably the youngest ever put out by the club and what a sterling job they did keeping the experienced visitors frontline quiet. New loan signing from Needham Market Callum Harrison showed up well and looked good on the ball.

AFC suffered a blow early on when Billy Holland had to be replaced after only five minutes after a clash of heads, another youngster Ollie Gravett took over.

The visitors had the first chance when Emiel Aiken was through, but Paul Walker in the AFC goal easily saved, while at the other end Wright shot wide of the Cheshunt goal.

Harrison was on target but keeper Girling came out and saved but the ball fell to Phil Kelly but he could only earn a corner. The same pair soon combined again but this time Kelly fired wide as the visitors were feeling the pressure.

Jason Hallett for Cheshunt found himself free but he shot over as the visitors then picked two quick yellow cards. Hallett then was given a straight red card as was adjudged to have elbowed Tyler French.

The ten men were soon on the back foot as Ryan Horne struck the post with the ball falling to Kelly but could capitalise. However on 42 minutes AFC took the lead, Gravett got down the right and crossed hard into the six-yard box where the ball spun up off Ricky Sappleton and over Girling’s head and into the net.

Wright in the AFC midfield was working extremely hard and looking good on his return to the side. A quickly taken free kick on the AFC right wing saw Kelly latch onto the ball and run through to despatch it over Girling to put the home side two goals up.

The game was settled three minutes from time, Kelly was again involved as he powered down the right wing holding off Agholor and got in a cross that found the inrushing Horne who blasted home with the ball deflecting off a defender.
