The final of the Stenson Shield at Bury St Edmunds on Saturday will be between holders Woodbridge and Aldeburgh who have yet to win this Suffolk Golf Union scratch inter-club trophy. Play starts at 9.30am.

Aldeburgh Stenson Shield captain James Reiss returns with vice-captain Roger Taylor dropping to reserve.

Arthur Patten and Robertson are back after missing the semi-final win over Bury St Edmunds while Monty Scowsill returns from Exeter University. Gregor Tait is now in the United States.

Aldeburgh’s team is: Will Wright, Monty Scowsill, Nigel Robson, Josh Robertson, Ian Kitson, James Reiss, James Keely, Arthur Patten. Reserve and vice-captain: Roger Taylor.

Greenkeepers Toby Ayles and Tom Fowler play well together for Woodbridge while experience is provided by team captain Nathan Overton and two Suffolk Seniors, Andy Whittaker and Steve Mann.

Overton described Phil Ashenden as being “on fire” after the quarter-final win over Gorleston. He also has Ricky Dzierozynski and former Norfolk player Simon Peckford in his squad as well as junior Tom Auchterlonie.

Woodbridge are without James Tyler and Jasper Johnson from last year’s winning final. They both opted to play for Ipswich. Josh Robertson has switched his allegiance from Woodbridge to Aldeburgh.

Junior George Fricker was named in the Woodbridge Stenson team after a successful debut in the competition against Rookery Park in the semi-final.

However, a clash of fixtures has forced him to drop out.

Fricker won his first cap for England Schools last week when they beat Wales at Luffenham Heath. He won his singles but lost his foursomes when partnered by Henry Moncur from Abridge.

Fricker plays against Scotland Schools at Troon Darley on Tuesday. He flies to Scotland on Saturday with Sarah Wilson of Bramford Golf Centre, the team manager of the England Schools’ girls who include Norfolk’s Amelia Williamson and Amy Taylor.

The finals of the Hambro Cup and Tolly Cobbold Cups are on Sunday at Rookery Park.

Bury St Edmunds feature in both finals. They play Gorleston in the Hambro and Ufford Park in the Tolly.

Bury have won the Hambro Cup in 1935, 1975. 1996 and last year. Gorleston have been winners in 1937, 1985 and 1995. They are without Josh Manser whose place has been taken by Bob Richardson.

Bury’s past successes in the Tolly Cobbold Cup have been in 1997 and 2013. Ufford Park were winners in 2014.

Suffolk Ladies are building up for their appearance in the England county finals at Felixstowe Ferry (all week from September 18).

The ever-popular Cranworth Shield produced two exciting semi-finals. Newton Green beat Gorleston 5-4 at Fynn Valley. Woodbridge beat Fynn Valley at the first play-off hole at Newton Green. The final will be at Diss on September 28.

Suffolk girls finished fourth in East junior county week. They drew 3-3 with Bedfordshire, beat Cambs but struggled against the more powerful Norfolk, Herts and Essex.

Habebul Islam (Ipswich) completed his tough programme of events with a third place in the Ealing Golf Club Scratch Open, an event at which he was the youngest-ever winner last year.

A cold putter saw Habebul have an opening round of 75, nine shots off the pace.

He produced the best round of the tournament, six under par 64, in the afternoon to finish two shots off being involved in a play-off> he had an overall score of 139. He won with 140 a year ago.

Habebul was disappointed to miss the cut in the North of England Under 16 Championship. After his fourth-place finish in the McGregor Trophy he was among the favourites at Pannal. The form book did not work out.
