ASTON Villa manager Gerard Houllier was detained in hospital last night after being taken ill, it has been reported.

The 63-year-old Frenchman, who had a routine check-up with the club’s medical staff last week, admitted himself to hospital last night after feeling unwell.

Houllier underwent open heart surgery in 2001 during his time as Liverpool boss and was out of the game for five months, but it is understood he has already contacted Villa chief executive Paul Faulkner to allay any fears over his health.

Houllier’s assistant Gary McAllister is expected to lead the team against Stoke this weekend.
