BOXING Day was End-of-Season presentation day for members of Ipswich Cycling Association clubs who converged on Henley Community Centre for the distribution of awards for the evening series of time trials run throughout the summer.

Winner of the senior men’s league was Antony Birt of the Ipswich Bicycle Club, while last year’s senior winner Chris Leggett (Stowmarket & District) took the 2012 veteran’s league in his first season as a 40+ rider. Ipswich BC’s Tanya Griffiths won the ladies league while top junior was Rob Ormond also of IBC. As well as celebrating their winners league members took part in a fun time trial in which riders had to predict their times - held on a truncated course as there were floods on the lower parts of the usual Henley circuit.

Also on Boxing Day, but at Zolder in Belgium, XRT/Elmy cyclo-cross rider Hugo Robinson crashed out of the Under 23 race in the World Cup meeting.

Tomorrow’s 13th round of the Eastern Cyclo-Cross League looks likely to be a new experience for many - the course at World Horse Welfare near Snetterton is partly indoors. The equestrian centre has an indoor schooling ring which competitors will enter several times in the course of a lap, and which will also house the pits and a spectator viewing area. However bike-washing will have to take place outside. This imaginative course has been designed by Wymondham father and daughter pair Phil and Anna Buick who were, for instance, respective winners of the veteran’s and women’s races at the Amis Velo Supacross at Colchester in October and also have wide experience of courses used in other parts of the country.

Scratchman in the New Year’s Day 10 on the Wymondham bypass is Red Lodge rider Mark Arnold (Team Pedal Revolution) with last year’s winner Beccles roadman Stuart Pryce (Strada Sport) as one of his main rivals.

TAKING a moment to look back at the overall placings in the Eastern Road Race League, top local rider in 2012 was Scott Cousins of the Maldon & District club who was 11th in the 140 rider list. Winner by a large margin was Malcolm Smith (St Ives CC), while best Suffolk man was Liam Gentry (Strada Sport) who is from Carlton Colville near Lowestoft and took 14th spot. Tim Butt (Maldon & District) was 21st and Chris Guy (Iceni) from Beccles 25th. In the ERRL club standings the winners were East London Velo, with Strada Sport ranked fourth and Iceni Velo sixth.
