COLCHESTER United skipper Karl Duguid has received the full backing of his manager, following his role in Kevin Maher's dismissal during Saturday's controversial Essex derby against Southend.

Shrimpers captain Maher was furious to be sent off for an off-the-ball incident, accusing Duguid of “conning the referee” and of “cheating.” Maher insisted that he had not even touched Duguid, who ended up on the floor clutching his face.

“I've seen the video. Kevin Maher runs past Karl and then turns around. He lowers his head and upper body towards Karl,” revealed U's boss Geraint Williams last night.

“It's ridiculous for Southend to say that there was no contact. I will not be taking any action against Karl. If he had been found to be in the wrong, then we would have taken internal action. But that won't be happening.”

The U's beat Southend 3-0. The visitors ended up with just nine men, following the dismissals of Maher and Mark Gower in quick succession before the hour mark.
