Barnsley manager Paul Heckingbottom admitted the nature of his side’s 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich Town was sickening.

The hosts could have been 4-0 up at half-time, had it not been for some impressive Bartosz Bialkowski saves and a goalline clearance from Joe Garner.

As it happened, they had to settle for Tom Bradshaw’s goal giving them the lead at the break, David McGoldrick and Martyn Waghorn punishing the Reds’ profligacy in the second half.

After the game, Heckingbottom, who saw his team lose 3-1 at Bristol City in their opening game last Saturday, said: “The lads were really pleased with the performance, the changes we made, the way we exectued information, but it is the end product (that was missing).

“That’s the sickening thing, getting beat by a team that had two shots on goal and scored two goals. That’s a sickener.

“We want to win games and I thought we were far the better side throughout.

“We had a 10-minute spell after half-time before they scored where they (Ipswich) had brought on some experience, started going direct, getting the ball early, winning lots of duels in the middle of the park and putting us under pressure, but we weathered that.

“They got the goal and I thought we then got back on top without creating enough, but we did more than enough to win that, but we have not.

“At the minute we have to play even better than that to win a game, but our aim is to win those games and make sure we win games when we are second-best.”
