ENGLAND skipper John Terry has failed to win his fitness battle and has not been included in the England squad to play Austria in a friendly on Saturday and the crucial Euro 2008 qualifying match against Croatia.

David Beckham has been recalled to the England squad for the final qualifier and is set to win his 98th and 99th caps.

National boss Steve McClaren had hoped the 26-year-old talismanic defender Terry would have recovered from the knee injury he sustained in training but has been forced to admit defeat.

McClaren now faces a defensive crisis with his other first choice central defender Rio Ferdinand suspended for the game at Wembley on November 21.
