Bury St Edmunds’ Director of Rugby, Gavin Hogg, will be hoping to mark his last home game with a victory, before his summer departure.
Hogg is off to pastures new, at Old Albanians next season, but he wants his Bury side to target two wins from their last two matches, starting at home to Canterbury tomorrow afternoon (3pm).
Bury achieved their National League Two South status last month, by recording three wins on the bounce over Exmouth, Barnes and Barnstaple, followed by a thrilling 29-29 draw against Cinderford in their previous home match on April 1.
“My move to Old Albanians is a great opportunity for me, but in the short term I want to finish the season on a high note with Bury,” insisted Hogg.
“It should be a good game this weekend. Canterbury were in good form during the first half of the season, which has got them into their current (ninth) position, although they have been more inconsistent since Christmas.
“They lost at home to Barnes in their last match, so we see this as a chance to build up some momentum going into next season. We want a positive end to the season, and we will be targeting two wins from our last two matches.
“We have already achieved our main aim, of retaining our league status, but there is a chance we could nick another place up the table as well.
“I have always found Bury (The Haberden) to have one of the best atmospheres in the whole league, when the supporters get behind their team. It’s a special place.
“I’ve had six great seasons at the club, and I’m sure at some time this weekend I will have a few minutes to reflect on those last few years,” added Hogg.
Bury will be boosted by the return of fly-half Liam McBride, after a strained hamstring, and also scrum-half Donovan O’Grady after his hamstring problems.
Louis Whetton returns after an ankle injury in the second row, while Matt Edison is available again in the back row.
“We have a few players coming back, so it’s a chance to freshen up things,” confirmed Hogg.
Tomorrow also marks 10 successful years of partnership with the Club’s Main Sponsor, Frames Conservatories Direct,
Bury, 11th in the table, end the season at Clifton next weekend.
