Boss Gary Megson today said they have made a bid for the Sporting Lisbon midfielder - but his team face stiff competition in the battle for the playmaker's signature.
Manchester City are also said to have bid for Veloso, 22, while Sir Alex Ferguson is known to be interested in taking Veloso to Old Trafford.
It is unclear exactly how much Veloso would cost, but the get-out clause in his contract is �28m. Manchester City are thought to have bid �19m.
