Division 1N
Braintree 0 Colchester 2
SUNDAY lunchtime saw the last game of the season against local rivals Braintree. Colchester were clearly feeling the pressure and found it difficult to string passes together. Braintree dominated the first half and would have scored from a penalty corner but for a goal line block by Naomi Allen.
Coach Wayne Masters made it clear at half time that Colchester were going to have to improve if they wanted to win the league. With this a different side seemed to appear for the second half. The ball was played around the back and the team suddenly had more width with good linking play between defence and midfield.
On the left Lorraine Arthur was linking well with Emma Cresswell-Maynard and on the right Sarah Rose was able to find Kirsty Barber to open up the play. The breakthrough finally came courtesy of a through ball from Anna Foley to Lucy Struth. With some neat control Struth found the space to strike the ball straight into the Braintree goal.
The relief was clearly visible on the Colchester player's faces and the delight was doubled when the second goal came minutes later after Karen Harris dribbled through the Braintree defence laying the ball across the goal for Kirsty Barber to tap in. With a 2-0 lead Colchester saw out the rest of the game and when the final whistle went a delighted team could finally celebrate the league title.
