BRAINTREE boss Alan Devonshire admits he wants to improve his frontline options this month – but insists he does not need a more fearful attack ahead of today’s trip to Tamworth.

Braintree have already snapped up 19-year-old attacking midfielder Bradley Dack on a month’s loan from League Two club Gillingham in the January transfer window.

But Devonshire, whose side dropped back into the Blue Square Bet Premier relegation zone after a single-goal defeat at Cambridge United on New Year’s Day, admits he is targeting further signings to bolster a somewhat blunt attack – the division’s joint-lowest goalscorers on 26 strikes.

However, after hitting five in their previous two victories against Southport and Forest Green before drawing blanks in both of their fixtures against Cambridge over the festive period, the Iron boss will not rush headlong into reinforcing his squad.

“Everyone wants to have a fearful attack but we are Braintree and have to be sensible,” said Devonshire.

“We are looking to bring in a few new faces and are having a look at a few players to improve our attacking options.

“But it is important we bring in the right players.”

He added: “It is a bit frustrating creating chances and not finishing them but I don’t think we have to be that more clinical in front of goal.

“We have been working on our finishing but we’ve done ok this season and are a lot stronger defensively.”

Braintree are now fourth-from-bottom of the division again after Michael Gash’s late goal meant Cambridge extended their unbeaten run to eight games with victory over Braintree.

However, Devonshire was left ruing a controversial referring decision after United’s Liam Hughes appeared to block Alan Massey’s goal-bound effort with his arm.

“There was a stonewall penalty not given to us against Cambridge,” said Devonshire. “We’ve looked at it on the DVD and it’s a blatant handball.

“It has cost us the game and that’s the way it’s been going for us lately.

“They scored one on Boxing Day that was two-and-a-half yards offside and these decisions are costing us.

“But you’ll have hiccups during the season like the Cambridge games, and we’ll just have to knuckle down again.

“All games are different. We’ve beaten teams like Forest Green and Luton and no-one expected that.”

Devonshire will be hoping for better luck away to 16th-placed Tamworth today (3pm ko), but warned his side of the physical threat the Staffordshire club will present.

“We’ll have to be strong and match Tamworth physically as it’s going to be a tough game, but hopefully we can pick up a win,” he added.

“We have got to get 26 points from 23 games and I think we’ll be ok this season.”
