Braintree Town boss Alan Devonshire expressed his satisfaction after Iron held high-flying Woking to a goalless draw at Cressing Road on Saturday.

Following their midweek efforts, which saw them need extra-time to see off lower-league Weymouth in the FA Cup, the hosts created few clear-cut chances against the Cards, who dropped to fifth as a result.

As for Town, they find themselves in 15th position but more worryingly, stretched their winless run to eight games, ahead of tomorrow night’s home clash with seventh-placed Grimsby Town in Essex.

“Second half I thought we bossed it and were the only team that was going to win the game,” said Devonshire.

“I was pleased with it. It was a decent game, with two decent sides on the day and it was probably a fair result in the end. To get a draw at the end of the day, we’ll take it and look forward to Tuesday.”

“I might start Charlie (Strutton) on Tuesday, I’ll have a chat with him and see how he feels, but I will be resting a few on Tuesday.”

“I felt that we were a bit shaky defensively first half, but second half I was really pleased with our shape was and the way we played.

“All that was missing was a goal, but they are a very good side. Garry’s done very well with them this season. We’ll take it, and we’ll see how we go for Tuesday.”

Iron, who have scored just twice in their last eight league outings, showed some promise with Simeon Akinola – a two goal hero in midweek – looking positive throughout.

The visitors, managed by Garry Hill, began the brighter and Nick Hamman recovered well to divert a loose ball off the goal-line after a mix-up with on-loan Ipswich Town defender, Omar Sowumni.

The goakeeper then saved well from Guiseppe Sole, after the visiting striker had a shot inside the home side’s area.

Akinola went close twice at the other end and his side were in the ascendancy after the interval, spurning a great chance on the hour.

Akinola fed in a ball to strike partner Jordan Cox and after his shot was blocked, the referee waved away appeals for a penalty. The striker’s second attempt then went wide.

Iron looked the more likely team, to score but were frustrated by the visitors and Mitch Brundle ended up shooting well wide from distance as he and the Iron became increasingly desperate.

Brundle resorted to a speculative effort from way out which he put well wide with two minutes of normal time to play in a game of very few chances.

Another Ipswich Town player, Jack Marriott, on-loan at Woking, came on as a second-half substitute for the visitors.
