Brantham Athletic have completed their first signing of the summer, bringing in former Needham Market striker, Sam Newson.

Newson scored 21 goals for Maldon & Tiptree in Ryman North last season, but has now elected to drop down a division, signing a two-year deal with The Blue Imps, managed jointly by Michael Brothers and Matt Carmichael.

The duo led Brantham to a sixth-placed finish in the Thurlow Nunn Premier last season, having taken over from Paul Skingley midway through the campaign, and the aim is to surpass that next season.

“The club wants to go up to the next level, we have a long-term plan at Brantham, and Sam is the sort of player that can elevate a side to the next level,” said Carmichael, who revealed the club were speaking to a number of other targets.

“It was a deal that we wanted to get over the line and once we found out Sam was available, we got it done.”
