THE emergence of Drey Wright has been a highlight of a so far rather gloomy season for Colchester United.

Teenager Wright, who is the son of former Ipswich Town midfielder Jermaine Wright, looks to have the talent, and the pedigree, to become a regular in the U’s first team over the years to come.

Manager Joe Dunne certainly predicts a very bright future for Wright.

The 17-year-old was unleashed as a second-half substitute at Bournemouth on Saturday, and he gave the in-form Cherries a few headaches with his refreshing attack-minded style down the flank.

Bournemouth held on for a narrow 1-0 win, but Dunne was encouraged by his side’s improved display, and in particular the contribution of rookie Wright.

“Drey Wright was outstanding again when he came on,” enthused Dunne.

“His head was excellent, and we have got a player of the future there.”

Saturday was only Wright’s sixth appearance in the first team.

He started the U’s first game of the campaign, in the Capital One Cup at Yeovil, having caught the eye in pre-season, and has since enjoyed five outings as a substitute.

Going back to last season, Wright made such an impression in the youth team that he was offered a two-year professional contract at the end of his first year in the Academy.

He looks set for a big role to play in the U’s long-term future, but on last weekend’s evidence, he could be a key figure in the short-term as well.

Meanwhile, Colchester United’s scheduled Essex Senior Cup tie at Brentwood Town tonight has been postponed due to floodlight failure. It has been rearranged for tomorrow night, to take place at the Weston Homes Community Stadium with a 7.45pm kick-off time.
