The full-back was last night having a medical at Turf Moor, along with Derby ace Tyrone Mears.
Edgar, 22, made 13 Toon starts and marked his debut with a fine goal against Manchester United.
He also held talks with Birmingham.

The Rams have accepted a �500,000 offer for right-back Mears, 26, who spent last season on loan at Marseilles.
Meanwhile, former Celtic defender Bobo Balde, 33, also claims he has been offered a deal by Coyle and a trial by Birmingham.
