Bury St Edmunds’ remarkable run of results, during the closing weeks of the season, continued apace with a superb five-wicket win against Copdock & Old Ipswichian last Saturday.

Rock bottom of the Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League just five weeks ago, with just one solitary victory from their first 15 fixtures, Bury have turned their season around by registering five wins on the bounce.

They are still in the thick of the battle to avoid bottom spot, and so the danger of a play-off tie to decide their EAPL future, but their fate is in their own hands.

Fresh from wins over Mildenhall, Cambridge Granta, Norwich and Horsford, an in-form Bury bowled out Copdock & OI for just 157 at The Victory Ground.

Sean Park’s men, bolstered by a dominant 83 not out from overseas player Murray Commins, reached their target with five wickets in hand, and 16.3 overs to spare.

Norwich’s crushing win over Burwell & Exning, by 128 runs, keeps the Norfolk club, who are bottom of the table, just 12 points behind Bury going into the last two weekends of the season.

However, it is now no longer just a two-way scrap at the foot of the table, because Burwell & Exning and Vauxhall Mallards are both just 19 points clear of second-from bottom Bury, with Cambridge Granta also in the mix.

And with 25 points guaranteed for a victory, it is developing into a thrilling end to the season.

Bury skipper Park won the toss and elected to field, and his bowlers responded by performing well as a unit to restrict Copdock.

In fact, only three visiting batsmen reached double figures, led by opener Fergus Atkins, who made a solid 55 off 95 balls.

Jed Cawkwell scored 24 in the middle order, while captain Chris Swallow was 22 not out at No. 8.

For Bury, opening bowler Dominic Manthorpe claimed figures of 8.3-0-24-3, although his wickets were taken during the second half of the innings.

Makeshift opening bowler Park took two for 21, while George Loyd made the first breakthrough (7-0-23-1). Josh Cantrell took two for 32 off his 10 overs.

Bury lost Tom Curran (4) and Max Whittaker (12) early on, before Commins found excellent support from Alfie Marston (36). The duo added 94 for the third wicket to effectively win the match, Commins hitting a six and 11 fours in his unbeaten 83.
